Our TAVERNA line begins with Hans von Taverna, who was born in 1685. He married Anna Hermann and they had five children: Hans Martin von Taverna, Born in 1710; Margreth von Taverna; Jori von Taverna, born 1716; Elsbeth von Taverna; and Anna von Taverna, born on January 20, 1731/32. Anna did not live long, however, dying March 29, 1735. I am descended from Hans Martin von Taverna. |
Fast forward a few generations to Peter Taverna, who was born in Küblis, Grabunden, Switzerland, on June 10, 1838, descended from Hans Martin von Taverna. Peter married Christine Jegen on November 23, 1862 in Küblis. While still in Küblis, Peter and Christine had two children: my great great grandmother Maria, and her brother Conrad. Maria was born on October 25, 1863 and Conrad on July 09, 1865. Sometime in the next two years, Peter and Christine and their two children came to America, settling in Wabasha, Minnesota. Once in Wabasha, Peter and Christine had seven more children from 1867 to 1881. Altogether, Peter and Christine's nine children are as follows:
| 1. | Maria Taverna | Born October 25, 1863 in Küblis | Died January 02, 1895, in Wabasha | 2. | Conrad Taverna | Born July 09, 1865 in Küblis | Died November 18, 1938, in St. Paul | 3. | Maggie Taverna | Born June 09, 1867 in Wabasha | Died May 12, 1884, in Wabasha | 4. | Lizzie Taverna | Born May 29, 1869 in Wabasha | Died February 16, 1881, in Wabasha | 5. | Pauline Taverna | Born June 28, 1871 in Wabasha | Died Mar 15, 1959, in Washington Co., MN | 6. | Augusta Taverna | Born November 30, 1874 in Wabasha | Died April 14, 1932, in North St. Paul | 7. | Tina Taverna | Born May 10, 1876 in Wabasha | Died February 28, 1881, in Wabasha | 8. | Anna Taverna | Born August 10, 1879 in Wabasha | Died February 28, 1881, in Wabasha | 9. | Peter Taverna | Born January 22, 1881 in Wabasha | Died in 1920 in North St. Paul |
Here's what we know about Peter and Christine's nine children:
1. Maria Taverna married my great-great grandfather, Christian Loretz, on August 27, 1887, in Wabasha, Minnesota. Maria and Christian had three children: (1a) Christine Margaret Loretz, born March 14, 1888 in Wabasha; (1b) Anna Pauline Loretz (my great grandmother) born March 25, 1890 in North St. Paul; and (1c) Mary Loretz, born May 27, 1892, in Superior, Wisconsin.
3. Maggie Taverna was only 17 at the time of her death. She had not married and had no children. Maggie is buried at Riverview Cemetary, in Wabasha, Minnesota.
4. Lizzie Taverna also died very young, on February 16, 1881. She was 11 years old. Lizzie is buried in Riverview Cemetary, in Wabasha, Minnesota. The cause of her death, and that of her sisters Tina and Anna, was a Diptheria outbreak.
5. Pauline Taverna married Edwin Huseby and then later William Neuman, Sr., and that's all I have documented on this branch of our Taverna tree. Pauline died on March 15, 1959 in Washington County, Minnesota.
6. Augusta Taverna married Fredrick Gaffney. Much like her sister Pauline, that's pretty much all we know at this time. Auguste died on April 14, 1932 in No. St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota.
7. Tina Taverna died in Wabasha in the Diptheria epidemic of 1881.
8. Anna Taverna died the same day as her sister Tina, on February 28, 1881.
9. Peter Taverna somehow avoided the Diptheria epidemic, even though he was just a month old and very suseptible at the time. Peter married Annetta Hoffman and died before he was 40 years old.
