Rhomberg Family Information

While I am personally five generations removed from the Rhomberg surname, it remains a large part of my family’s genealogy. The Rhomberg name is very prominent and well-respected, both in Dubuque, Iowa, where many of my forefathers settled and established thriving businesses, and in Dornbirn, Austria, a place from where most Rhombergs originated.

On May 23, 1856, my great great great grandmother Maria Katharina Rhomberg married my great great great grandfather Johann Nepomuk Luger in Dubuque, Iowa. The union of these two families was not the first in our lineage. Going back to Dornbirn, there are many instances of Lugers and Rhombergs marrying. In fact, our family tree is different from most in that from the roots to the branch, there is typically but one path—in my family many paths will take one from the roots to a specific branch!

Maria Katharina Rhomberg’s parents were Johann Rhomberg and Katharina Zumtobel. Including Maria Katharina, her parents had eight children:

Franz Xaver Born November 23, 1831
Maria Katharina Born December 26, 1832
Joseph Andreas Born October 27, 1835
Anna Maria Born October 09, 1836
Franz Anton Born May 8, 1839
Franz Martin Born November 22, 1840
Maria Carolina Born July 19, 1844
Ferdinand Born September 11, 1845

Interestingly, and again unlike other family trees, we know more about Maria Katharina Rhomberg’s ancestors than we know about her siblings descendents. What we DO know is rather limited and much more census work is needed to uncover these lost lines of the Rhomberg tree. What we do know about Maria Katharina’s siblings and their descendents is summarized as follows:

Franz Xaver Rhomberg, also known as Frank, married Dora Luth, although I don’t know when or where. They had four children: John, John L., Amelia and Katherine. I know that John L. married a Nellie C. Abbott in Dubuque on June 14, 1898, that Amelia married a John Engler and that Katharina married a John Jaeger, all according to the Stambaum der Rawenberg – Rhomberg, which I was able to view at the Loras College Library. I recently made contact with the great grandson of Katherina and John Jaeger so I now know more about this line of the family.

I have no further information about Joseph Andreas Rhomberg—I don’t even know for sure if he came to America though I certainly suspect that he had. Anna Maria Rhomberg married Valentin Duttle in Dubuque on May 19, 1856. Franz Martin Rhomberg married a Carolina Eifler and together they had at least four children—Paulina, Catherina, John and another John. Maria Carolina married a Louis Fischer in Dubuque on February 17, 1862 and as many as five children were born to the couple— Emma C., Louis A., Julia, Frank and Bertha.

Here are some biographical sketches from a Dubuque history publication:
