The present town of Eden, Roslyn, Lake City, Hillhead and Grenville got their start when the railroad extended its lines in 1914 to Grenville. In the Aug. 6 files of the Marshall County Journal, the date set for the auction sale of town property was Aug. 19, 1914 at Eden. The story said "All business chances are open until auction days. Get in on the ground floor in a rich, well settled country where crops have held the best general average for the last thirty years, where farmers have grown rich in spite of the handicap of living from 20 to 30 miles from markets, where there is money with which to buy merchandise and people to use the goods. The notice was signed by the Scenic route Townsite Co., F. E. Sprout, Townsite Agent.

Auction sale of city lots in New Eden aggregated $7305 and the lots averaged $456.50 each, the lowest sale being $310 and the highest $1025. The high lot was purchased by Abbott and Shultz of Waubay. Among the purchasers were Dr. Pheeren, Stickney: Abbott and Schultz; Mr. Starburg, New Effington; P. B. Carlson, Hanse; two lots; Carl Rust, Frank; Lewis Sommers, Frank; F. Weusleck, Claire City; Stavig Bros. Sisseton; H. Helvig, Sisseton, John Metchler, Frank; Mike Trautner, Frank; and A. A. Peterson, Sisseton. When the railroad came through, 80 acres of land were purchased for the townsite, 40 acres from Math Unger and 40 acres from Louie Sommers.
