Lucas [Lukas] Deutsch:
Lucas and Joe L. Deutsch
by Matilda Deutsch Waletich
from "Eden the First 75 Years: 1914 - 1989"
Lucas Deutsch was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Deutsch. Michael
was born in 1825 and died in 1897. Michael is buried in St. Michael's
Cemetary, south of Eden and his wife is buried in Canada.
Lucas came into this world in 1857 in Austria and passed away in
1927 in South Dakota. His first wife died in Austria and left him
with a daughter, Caroline, who was born in 1879. Afterwards Lucas
married Mary Koldurfer (1850 - 1934). The children born to them in
Austria were Frank (1882 - 1966), Henry (1886 - 1966).
Lucas, with his wife and three children, came to this country in
1888 with the help of Stephan Schuster. They took up a homestead.
First they lived in Day County and later moved to Marshall County.
They lived in a sod house about 50 feet from where Florenz Deutsch
now lives. After a couple of years they built a house which is
presently part of the Florenz Deutsch home.
On the way over from Austria, Frank had a new hat for the long
journey to America, but poor Frank was standing on the deck and the
wind blew his hat into the ocean.
After they were settled in their new home, the family increased.
Mary (1888 - 1911) was married to Carl Fleischhaker and died in
child birth. Her baby son also died.
Rose (1890 - 1959) married Ted Halbauer and they had one son. All
are now deceased.
Joe L. born in 1892 and died in 1968. He married Anna Sattler
(1893 - 1988).
Caroline married Andrew Halbauer. Frank married Mary Orslan, which
was a double wedding with Mary Deutsch and Carl Fleischhaker. Both
women passed away in the first year of marriage. Frank later married
Theresa Orslan. Henry never married and spent his entire life working
with Joe L.
After marriage, the Lucas family built a house about a quarter of a
mile south of the present house. The site is now a pasture on
Florenz's farm. Lucas, Mary and Henry moved to this house and
Joe L. and family lived in the family home. After Lucas died in
1927, Henry and his mother moved in with Joe L. and Anna, and the
house was sold to Frank Sattler. It is now owned by LaVern Sattler.
This homestead was owned by three generations with Florenz the
present owner.
