Andrew [Andreas] Halbauer, Sr.:
Andrew Halbauer Sr.
by Henry Halbauer
from "Eden - The First 75 Years: 1914 - 1989"
Andrew Halbauer Sr. was born Nov. 22, 1864 in Walla, Austria.
He died March 3, 1945 in Eden S.D.
Caroline Deutsch Halbauer was born Nov. 26, 1879 in Austria. She
died June 30, 1957 in Eden S.D.
Andrew came to the United States some time in the 1870's. His first
job was in St. Paul, MN where he worked on the Como St. Bridge.
From there he went to Stearns County, MN where he worked as a
well digger. I understand some of the wells are still in use. He
also lived in the Minot, ND area and he worked building the
railroad in the Black Hills. He came to the Eden area in 1891.
Some time in 1896 he married Caroline Deutsch. They lived on a
farm three miles north of Eden. They had 16 children. Two of
them died in infancy and the rest all grew up on the farm. Their
children are Theresa (Tracy) Nelson, Andrew Jr. (died in 1898),
Otilia Dretsch, Mike, Rose Willsey, Andrew, Rudolph, Caroline
Spreeman, Albert, Louisa (died in 1909), Alois, Robert, George,
Henry, Agnes Lendway and Marie Swinehart. Six of the children
are still living. They are Tracy, Rose, Andrew, Henry, Agnes
and Marie.
Three of the boys served in the Army during World War II. Rudolph
and George served in the United States and Henry served in the
United States and overseas in Europe.
