Andrew [Andreas] Halbauer, Sr.:
Andrew Halbauer
from Marshall County History book
Andrew Halbauer (1864 - 1945) came to the United States in the
1870's from Walla, Austria-Hungary, as a stowaway. His dad,
Joseph, homesteaded in Stearns County in St. Martins, Minnesota.
Andrew worked on a bridge in St. Paul, Minnesota; in Stearns
County area as a well digger; in Omaha, Nebraska and then
homesteaded in Minot, North Dakota. He went broke there and then
helped build the Fargo-Moorhead bridge and a bridge in Wahpeton,
North Dakota. Some time in the 1880's he helped to build the
railroad into Deadwood, South Dakota and then lived in Pierre
for a while. From there he worked in Webster and finally moved
to a farm on Stink Lake near Eden, South Dakota in the year 1894.
Some time in the year of 1896, Andrew married Caroline Deutsch,
also from Walla. They lived in a very small building, later used
as a smoke house, until they built the home that still stands on
the farm. Most of the children were born and raised in this house
and in the year of 1978 it really had changed very little. Sixteen
children were born to this family. They are as follows:
Theresa, born in 1897, married Andrew Nelson and had four children.
Andrew, Jr., born in 1898, died shortly.
Othilla (Tillie) was born in 1899 and married Tony Dretsch. She
has spent most of her life in Northern Minnesota and had six
children.
Michael (1900 - 1977) married Mary Uhlir, had two children and
lived most of his life in St. Paul.
Rose, born in 1902, married Emil Willsey. They moved to Indiana
where they have lived most of their lives and had five children.
Andrew, born in 1903, never married and lived in the Eden area
all his life.
Rudolph (1904 - 1976) married Margaret Deutsch and had two
children. They farmed in the Eden area, but retired to Hankinson,
North Dakota.
Caroline (1906 - 1961) married Albert (Bert) Spreeman, had one
child and lived most of her life in St. Paul.
Joseph Albert (1908 - 1972) married Evelyn Streier and later
married Viola Ehman; they had no children and lived in St. Paul,
Minnesota.
Louise was born in 1909 and died the same year.
Alois was born in 1910, and was killed in a car accident in 1929.
Robert (1912 - 1976) lived in the Eden area all his life.
George (1914 - 1955) married Lillian Marlow and lived in St. Paul.
Henry was born in 1915 and farmed on the home farm until 1975
when he moved to Eden.
Agnes, born in 1917, married Francis (Frank) Lendway; they have
six children and live in St. Paul.
Marie was born in 1918, married Paul Swinehart, lives in St. Paul
and has two children.
Strange, with such a large family, there is only one boy to carry on
the family name. That is Rudolph's son. There were two others, but
both are now deceased.
